    Selecting Young Fighting Roosters

For beginners, understanding the breed and selection process is crucial. This is the first step in ensuring young fighting roosters grow quickly.

    Breeds

There are two main breeds: “Đòn” and “Cựa”. Professionals usually focus on one breed due to different care, training, and nurturing techniques.

    • Đòn Roosters:
      • Originating from central Vietnam, known for fighting with their shanks and feet.
      • No spurs or very short ones.
      • Large neck, thick, wrinkled skin.
      • Slow feather growth, with only down feathers at 6-8 weeks old.
      • Legs with two rows of scales and a distinct line between them.
      • Types: Mã Lại and Mã Chỉ.
    • Cựa Roosters:
      • Smaller and lighter with full feather development.
      • Sharp, fast-growing spurs.
      • Small, round eyes, thin eyelids, short legs.

    Selection Criteria

    • Reputable Breeding Farms:
      • Eggs are numbered and hatched separately. Chicks are tagged on their wings and legs for easy lineage tracking.
    • Physical Characteristics:
      • Healthy chicks with no deformities, fluffy down feathers, firm legs, and bright eyes.
    • Avoid Chicks With:
      • Curved backs, poor vision, misshapen pupils, deformed beaks, swollen or deformed feet, uneven chest muscles, and matted feathers.

    Housing and Equipment

Proper housing is critical for raising healthy, aggressive fighting roosters.

    • Location: High, dry, well-ventilated, ideally facing southeast or east.
    • Structure: Use B40 wire mesh around the coop for protection. The brooding box should be 2m x 1m x 0.5m for 100 chicks, with density adjusted according to age.
    • Flooring: Raised about 0.5m above ground for easy cleaning, using wire mesh or slatted bamboo.
    • Bedding: Use sawdust, dry straw, or rice husks, sterilized and dried, spread 5-10 cm thick.
    • Equipment:
      • Heat lamps (60-100W) to maintain warmth.
      • Adequate feeding and drinking troughs.
      • Windbreaks and rain covers.

    Water Supply

Water is crucial for young chicks, especially in the first few days.

    • First Days: Mix 5g of glucose and 1g of vitamin C per liter of water.
    • Cleanliness: Change water and clean troughs 4 times daily to prevent disease.
    • Temperature: In cold weather, use warm water at 27-28°C.

    Feeding Young Fighting Roosters

Young chicks have a delicate digestive system requiring careful dietary adjustments.

    First Week:

    • Day 1: Only water for the first 2 hours, then start feeding small grains like broken rice, cornmeal, small chick pellets, and sesame seeds, with finely chopped greens. Feed 5-6 times a day.

    Second Week:

    • Diet: Add hulled, cooked rice mixed with minced meat and vegetables.

    Third Week:

    • Additional Foods: Include small insects, meat, and cooked rice.

Post 1.5 months, include rice, corn, frogs, lizards, beef, egg yolks, vegetables, sprouts, insects, and aquatic animals. Feed twice daily at 9 am and 4-5 pm.

    Caring for Young Fighting Roosters

    Newborn Care:

    Ensure brooding conditions are optimal:

    • Density: 30-50 chicks/m² (1-7 days), 25-30 chicks/m² (8-28 days), <10 chicks/m² (over 28 days).
    • Light and Temperature: 5W/m² light, 28-32°C (1-7 days), 25-28°C (8-28 days), 22-25°C (over 28 days).
    • Humidity: 65-75%.
    • Debeaking: At 10-21 days to prevent pecking and feed wastage.

Provide B-complex vitamins and probiotics in the morning to boost immunity.

Care from 2 to 5 Months:

As roosters develop, their dietary needs change. They start to crow and show clear gender characteristics.

    • Diet: Balanced mix of rice bran, broken rice, corn, cooked fish, green vegetables, and protein sources like superworms and small eels.
    • Exercise: Regular sun exposure and outdoor play to strengthen muscles.

Techniques for Roosters Over 6 Months:

Roosters over six months require a specific diet and training regimen to become strong fighters.

    • Diet: Four meals daily with a balance of grains, vegetables, and protein sources like lean meat and small fish.
    • Training: Separate roosters into individual enclosures to prevent fighting, and start preliminary training matches to assess potential.

    Disease Prevention

Maintain a clean, dry, and well-ventilated environment to prevent diseases.

    • Bedding Management: Replace wet bedding promptly.
    • Feed Quality: Ensure fresh, clean feed and proper storage.
    • Vaccinations: Follow a vaccination schedule to prevent common diseases.
    • Hygiene: Regular cleaning and disinfection of the coop, and routine health checks.

By following these guidelines, you can raise young fighting roosters that are healthy, strong, and ready for battle.
